The 12-Bar Club was a legendary venue in Denmark Street, (also known as Tin Pan Alley) in London. It was intimate (small) and atmospheric (noisy) and Gamine loved to play there.
It became a tradition for Gamine to play there around Christmas time, so on this occasion they thought they'd have a go at a Christmas carol. As you know, Christmas is a time of much merriment, and as you may also know, Gamine have built a deserved reputation for exquisite sadness. How could they reconcile these two seemingly irreconcilable concepts? Well, having scoured the canon for a carol in a minor key, it became clear that 'God Rest Ye Merry, Gentlemen' would do the trick, so here it is.
The quality of the recording was state of the art for 2001, but nowadays looks a little less so. And the sound too - we've done what we could but sadly we couldn't stop everybody talking in the background. When the technology appears, rest assured we will be merciless.
